IN GENERAL, THERE ARE ONLY TWO TYPES OF COMPETITORS

THOSE WHO WIN AT ANY COST — EXCLAIMING VICTORY AND SCORNING DEFEAT

THOSE WHO COMPETE WITH A GOOD ATTITUDE AND GROW FROM THE EXPIRENCE

Remember that tournaments are not just for a medal. They allow you to meet new people, make new friends, put nerves to the test, and display skills. By focusing on these purposes, it is very possible to be happy whether one wins or loses. Most people think that the reward at a tournament is the medal, the big win is personal growth.

Championship FAQ – Family Martial Arts Centres

How does the Championship Work?

This year's Championship will solely focus on Dae Ryun Non-Contact points sparring. You will be placed into a group of up to 8 competitors matched by age and belt rank. You will have a minimum of 5 bouts with the other competitors and the medals will be decided on the number of wins you have had. In the event of a tie for a medal place, your scores from the matches will be calculated.

Do I need to be there all day?

No, you don't have to be there all day – the timing of the event for your category is published below – approximately 2 hours.

At previous events you could enter Hyung (Forms) and Kyok Pa (Breaking). Are you not doing that this year?

No, this year we are focusing on Dae Ryun (Sparring) to allow more chances to compete – rather than the tournament style. Next year we will have a Hyung and Kyok Pa Competition.

Will there be a Commemorative T-Shirt this year?

This year you will have the opportunity to purchase a bespoke embroidered Polo Shirt with your name on – orders will be taken on the entry form.

Will there be participation medals this year?

Yes, everyone who enters the Championship will receive a medal of participation if they don't win a gold, silver or bronze.

If I don't win my first bout am I out?

No, you will have 5 bouts with different competitors and you will be awarded points for the wins.

Do I need to bring my own sparring gear?

Yes. All competitors must bring their own sparring kit, which includes head guard, gloves. Boots, shin/instep protectors, groin guard (for males), and mouth guard are optional - Safety is our priority — competitors without head and gloves will not be permitted to spar.

What should I wear to the Championship?

Please wear your full clean uniform (Do Bok) and your belt. Make sure your belt is tied correctly. You may wear your sparring gear over your uniform when called to compete.

Can my family come to watch?

Yes! Spectators are welcome and encouraged. It’s a great opportunity for family and friends to show support. There will be designated seating areas for spectators.

How will I know when it's my turn to spar?

Your name and group will be called over the PA system. There will also be marshals guiding each group to the appropriate ring, so listen carefully and stay near your group’s gathering point.

Will there be food or drinks available?

We recommend bringing your own water and light snacks. There will NOT be refreshments at the venue.

Is this suitable for beginners or nervous students?

This event is for Green Belts and above. This is a non-contact competition designed to build confidence and experience. Everyone will be matched fairly, and instructors and referees will be on hand to support and ensure safety and enjoyment.

Can I change categories or withdraw after entering?

We understand plans can change. If you need to withdraw or make an adjustment, please contact your instructor as soon as possible. Changes may not be possible after the entry deadline.

How will medals be awarded?

Medals are awarded based on the number of wins in your group. If there's a tie, points scored will be used as a tiebreaker. Gold, silver, and bronze medals will be awarded, and all other competitors receive a participation medal.

Can I take photos or videos?

Yes, but please be respectful and mindful of others’ privacy. No flash photography during matches, and please don’t block the view for spectators.
